Christian Älvestam - that man is a fucking legend and I will not accept any other standpoint. Still, the melodic death metal of Svavelvinter went under my radar for quite some time. There are subtle black metal influences here and there (a very few!) which I enjoy h̶e̶m̶s̶k̶t̶ highly; the vocals, both clean and harsh of course, are a) once again the centrepiece of the songs; and - unsurprisingly - b) as impeccable, mesmerising and pleasant as always. Bow down to the king of all vocals!

The atmosphere of this album is fantastic. Makes you feel like you're knee-deep in the trenches drenched in mud, filth, sweat, and blood. Truly encapsulates the horrors of World War I, and the fact that the lyrics of some of the songs are taken from old war letters really adds to the authenticity. Favorite Track(s): Die Feuertaufe, Grabenlieder
